The new.hu Domain Registration Policy will take effect on March 20, 2025, bringing significant changes to the domain name application processes and domain-related administration.
On March 19, 2025, at 22:00, the central .hu domain registration system will be shut down. Existing and operational domain names will continue functioning, and their operation will not be affected.
The implementation of the new system will take a maximum of 48 hours from this time, meaning it will be completed by March 22, 2025, at 22:00 at the latest. The most optimistic estimates predict only a few hours of downtime, with 48 hours being the maximum. During this transition period, it will not be possible to register new domain names or modify existing ones (e.g., transfer, name server change, renewal, or ownership change). These functions will become available again once the new system is launched!
By document authentication, .hu domain registration will be discontinued, and only factor authentication domain registration will be available. This means that in the future, modifications will not be confirmed with documents but with a factor authentication verification method. The first factor will always be the email address, and in the case of two-factor authentication, the second factor will be the phone number.
All email addresses and phone numbers provided for domain name contacts must be confirmed. For new registrations and transfers, our company will handle the confirmation process by sending an email, SMS, or voice call. Until the email addresses and phone numbers are confirmed, the new registration or modification cannot proceed.
The confirmation is valid for one year, meaning it does not need to be repeated within this period for the same contact. Confirmation is only required if the given email address or phone number is used in a new registration, modification, or transfer and has not been verified in the past year.
A Registrar change or domain holder change will only be possible if the domain name is already using factor-based authentication. If the domain name is still document-based and you want to change the Registrar or domain holder, the domain must first be converted to factor authentication. Only the current Registrar can perform this modification; the new registrar cannot.
The system will introduce an AUTH Code. To transfer a domain, an AUTH Code will be required. This code must be requested from the current Registrar, and the .hu Registry will send it to the domain holder’s email address. The AUTH Code can only be requested for factor-based domain names.
Some administrative changes will also take effect. For example, new .hu domain names will no longer be limited to European applicants. The exact eligibility criteria can be found in the Domain Registration Policy.
According to the new policy, a domain name is now considered a contractual right with monetary value. This right expires if the legal entity holding the domain ceases to exist or if the individual domain holder passes away.
The central Registry system’s optional security service provides enhanced protection for registered data against unauthorized modifications. The application or removal of the registry lock can be performed by the domain holder independently, without the Registrar’s assistance, after authentication on start.domain.hu. To complete the authentication, a digitally signed document must be uploaded to start.domain.hu. It is important to note that while the registry lock is active on a domain name, the AUTH code cannot be requested for that domain. The registry lock must be removed first before obtaining the AUTH code.
